ORGAN
This organ arrangement of John Newton’s hymn, one of the most beloved of all time, opens with a Scottish bagpipe registration. Contrasting the bagpipes, the second section is set with a gospel registration, bespeaking the travail of those imprisoned on the fateful ship, captained by John Newton’s father, sailing with slaves destined for slavery. Text painting the darkness of sin, the next section is accented with heavy reeds in manuals and pedal. Bright mixtures are selected for the final, exhilarative, victorious words: “When we’ve been there ten thousand years.” In the ending tag, we hear the bagpipes again as they gently fade in the distance.
