This commission came with specific stipulations, which included: it must be a cappella, in a minor key, and a text of passion depicting Christ’s suffering. Composed solely from the Savior’s prayer in the garden of Gethsemane, each choral phrase represents a query of petitions, rising and falling in intensity until the ending firmly confesses a commitment to stay “Until Our Cup is Filled.”
